Shea Butter

Shea butter is a skin superfood that comes from the seeds of the fruit of the Shea (Karite) tree. Our unrefined shea butter comes from a co-op in rural Ghana. They value locally-source high quality, traceable, fair-traded and ethically-sourced shea butter, and that is why we support them.

Some of the reasons we love shea butter:

  1. Moisturising: The concentration of natural vitamins and fatty acids in shea makes it incredibly nourishing and moisturising for skin. It provides the skin with essential fatty acids and the nutrients necessary for collagen production. It is a great remedy for dry skin and also helps protect the skin’s natural oils.

  2. Reduces Inflammation: Studies have found that due to its cinnamic acid and other natural properties, shea butter was anti-inflammatory. One compound in particular, lupeol cinnamate, was found to reduce skin inflammation and even potentially help avoid skin mutations. This also makes it beneficial for some people with acne.

  3. Skin Smoothing: Shea contains fatty acids that protect and nourish the skin to prevent drying. It also helps in the skin’s natural collagen production. With long-term use, many people report skin softening and strengthening as well as wrinkle reduction.

Coconut Oil

All Natural only uses virgin organic coconut oil. We get our coconut oil from South Africa’s leading manufacturer of cold-pressed natural and organic oils. They started out on a small farm outside Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape and now have farms across Southern Africa.

Coconut oil is able to penetrate your skin on a deeper level than your average product because of its low molecular weight and the way it bonds with proteins. This makes it a great addition to body care products because the goodness really sinks in.

Some of the reasons we love coconut oil:

  1. Has Antimicrobial Properties: Coconut oil contains three fatty acids  that possess both disinfectant and antimicrobial properties, helping to protect against as well as heal microbial infections. Studies indicate that it’s effective against bacteria-related issues like skin infections and blemishes, nappy rash and body odour.

  2. Hydrates Skin: Research reveals that virgin coconut oil improves the symptoms of skin disorders by moisturising and soothing the skin. It protects the skin by enhancing skin barrier function. It also has saturated fats that helps the skin stay moisturised by preventing moisture loss through the skin’s pores. These fats give the skin a healthy, smooth and even tone.

  3. Reduces Inflammation: Coconut oil benefits for skin include its ability to improve skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and other inflammatory skin issues.

  4. Has Antioxidants: Coconut oil contains powerful antioxidants that absorb into to your skin can reduce oxidation. This helps to promote healthy ageing and reduce visible signs of stress.

Essential Oils

Where possible we like to source our oils locally. A few of our essential oils come from farmers in the Cederberg mountains who produce organic essential oils derived from indigenous fynbos species. So we know we are not only getting world class oils but we're supporting our local economy too.

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years in various cultures for medicinal and health purposes. They have antidepressant, stimulating, detoxifying, antibacterial, antiviral and calming properties, and are well known for their benefits for your skin.

Some of the reasons we love essential oils:

  1. Great for your skin: Essential oils used in our products can boost collagen, even out skin tone to help your complexion, promote skin cell turnover and reduce the signs of aging like sun spots and even help  protect your skin from environmental damage.

  2. Stimulates and refreshes: Some oils have stimulating effects and can actually increase oxygen to your brain, reduce exhaustion, and leave you feeling refreshed, focused and energised.

  3. Healing and inflammation: Oils can also help to improve inflammatory skin conditions, like dermatitis, eczema and lupus, improve the general appearance of your skin and even aid wound healing.

Bees Wax

We get our beeswax exclusively from local farmers and beekeepers. It's 100% organic and unrefined. This may mean slight variations in the colour of our products due to the variation in natural colours of the wax, but local is lekker and we don't mind.

Some of the reasons we love beeswax:

  1. Locks in moisture: When used in lotions and creams, beeswax creates a barrier which helps to seal moisture into the skin. This is especially beneficial for your skin during the dry winter months.

  2. Protects your skin: The barrier beeswax creates helps to protect the skin from environmental toxins and irritants. Unlike petroleum jelly, which is used in a large variety of beauty products, beeswax will not “suffocate” the skin, but rather allow it to breathe while still providing a protective barrier.

  3. Hydrates skin: Beeswax naturally contains vitamin A, which improves hydration to the skin and promotes cell regeneration.

Why are there still big words
on the all natural labels?

One of our values is to empower consumers with information about what is in our All Natural products.

We only use ingredients that we trust are good for you and are safe to be included. Here is one of the ingredients you may not be familiar with yet.

Cetearyl Alcohol

You may have heard that you should avoid hair and skin care products that contain alcohol. This is because many alcohols, like ethanol or rubbing alcohol, can be very drying for your skin.

When you look at a few of our product labels you will see that we use cetearyl alcohol (also known as cetylstearyl or cetyl stearyl alcohol). The good news is that cetearyl alcohol isn’t bad for you or your skin. Most importantly, this kind of fatty alcohol is very different from “regular” alcohols, like ethanol. These don’t have the same effect on the skin as other alcohols due to their chemical structure.

Cetearyl alcohol is one of fatty alcohols that are found in plants, like coconut and palm oil.  It is absolutely non-irritating and can actually be really beneficial for your skin. It can help with dry skin, give the product a lovely smooth texture and also helps to keep all the ingredients in products stable. We have seen these benefits of this skin-friendly form of alcohol in our products, which is why we are happy to include it.
